Drop Shadow Challenge - August 2011

Post by jayne~briarwoodpups on Sat Jul 23, 2011 12:30 pm

Woohoo!! It's so fun to have so many new members on board! Time to dust off the shelves and open up the shutters on our home away from home and get this party rolling again!

Sometimes we find it's fun to have team challenges just to stir up some creativity and get that mojo flowing strongly. I saw a layout in the last month that rocked my world, and when I stared at it long enough, I finally figured out why - the whole layout cluster had a large drop shadow so it looked like the whole thing was floating above the paper.

Now me, I will admit, I tend to find my favorite setting and stick to it. Sometimes I'll do all the elements in a cluster with the same drop shadow and I'm forcing myself to spice it up a bit.

I did the poll on which program we use so that I could figure out how to write a challenge for you all. Thank goodness it seems that we're all in Adobe products! I'm assuming we're all using drop shadows and know where the tools are, but just in case... In my PSE8 program, I have my layers work area visible over to the right (default program setting) and when I choose layer styles, I can choose drop shadows from the menu bar.

Of course, when I went to find that layout that inspired me so much, I can't find it anymore, but I did find one similar to it for some inspiration - see below.

THE CHALLENGE

1. To either take a whole cluster and set it above the background paper with a far drop shadow
or
2. Use varying degrees of drop shadows in your layout. Often, it is suggested that the elements closer/flatter to the background paper should have lower drop shadow settings, and elements farthest away should have higher drop shadow settings.

My layout for this example uses a variety of drop shadow settings. The first post is without any drop shadows at all and the second is with the variety of settings. Can you see what I mean?

And here is some more inspiration for you!

Tip: Sometimes when I use the really deep drop shadow, it looks so harsh on the layout - very dark and grainy. If you find the layer that you're working on to the right in the layers work area, then you'll see the little symbol beside it that indicates that a layer style has been applied to it (you can tell this when you hover the mouse over the symbol). Double-click on the layer style icon and it will open a screen where you can play with everything from the angle of your light, to the color of your drop shadow, to the size and opacity of your drop shadow. Usually just dropping the opacity softens it enough that no other adjustments are necessary.

I hope you find this challenge encouraging, inspiring, and good for all levels of drop shadow experience. If there are any questions or anyone needs a helping hand, just shout out!

These are amazing and the difference shadows make is huge! I'm in the mood to try one of those heavily layered (with varying depths) LOs....I think tomorrow is the day!

Sure thing, Wendy! I'm still working on mine!

One of my favorite shadow tips is to use a shade of a color that is in either the element you are adding the shadow to, or the background underneath it, really makes the shadows more realistic.

I'm adding this fantastic challenge to the newsletter going out this week!

Here's my page for the challenge. I focused on making my shadows more pronounced, and using different settings for the different kinds of elements. I even played with the shadow colour on the flowers on the right hand side.

ETA: I used "A painted sky" by the one and only Jenn - can't remember which design competition that was from??

What a unique LO, Christelle! I really like it! Your shadowing is great too, I always default to black, but need to remember to play with other colors from the palette, too!

Love it Christelle! Beautiful shadow work! A Painted Sky is from the Designer Apprentice challenge...and if I hadn't signed up for it several weeks ago, I'd definitely be taking a break, LOL! It's getting so I can't remember where I am or what I'm supposed to be doing Smile

Thanks for using it....I LOVE how it turned out!

Here's my entry! Using SweetPea (which, BTW, I love, Jenn!)

These are our friends from Scotland: Morris & Molly. Morris passed away last year, suddenly, from a heart attack. I'm going to frame this and give it to my mother-in-law for Christmas, she was/is very close to Molly.

Love using drop shadows - great challenge, Jayne!

Thanks, Jenn! Is it okay if I upload this to the galleries and just link to your main store at GDS? (I'm assuming the kit is not for sale)
